Lake Kivu, one of the largest in Africa, is located between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. This is a volcanic lake, the rate of carbon dioxide and methane is such that it is dangerous for the population (in 1986, the CO2 released by the Lake Nyos in Cameroon killed more than 1,700 people by asphyxiation). However, the high concentration of gas from Lake Kivu gives very interesting energy and economic perspectives for the region: the methane can be recycled into electricity to be commercially exploited. Sambaza (Tanganyika endemic sardines imported in the 1950s) gillnet fishing is an important economic resource in the region.

In the Northern Province, near the Volcanoes National Park, the cultivation of pyrethrum, a plant with white flowers that secretes a molecule that attacks the nervous system of insects, is booming.
